What you need to know about internet security?
- Understand how viruses and worms work. Worms
"live" on the internet and crawl around looking for
security holes in vulnerable computer. The best way to avoid worms
is to keep your Windows updated with the latest patches from the
Microsoft website. New security holes are found in Windows components
every few months. A few weeks later Microsoft usually has a patch
available and a few weeks after that a new worm is discovered
that was designed to crawl through that security hole.
- Generally, viruses arrive in one of two ways: The old way is
through sharing portable storage devices ie: floppy disc, cd,
USB or other portable devices. This is becoming less common.as
it becomes easier to exchange files by the internet. Modern viruses
grab control of infected computers, sending themselves to everyone
you have ever exchanged email with, so you can;t even trust email
from a friend.
- Avoid opening email "attachments" that you weren't
expecting to receive.
- Make sure there is a firewall between you and the internet.
- Install a virus cleaning utility.
- Install a anti-spyware utility or program.
- Avoid software that includes spyware.
- If a web page asks you to click Yes to install some software,
don't unless you know its a trusted site.
